Every brand has an origin story, and ours starts exactly where you’d hope: around a mahjong table, with good friends, on a night that ran later than anyone planned. That’s where Roxanne Corbett, the founder of Mischief Mahj, first wondered what would happen if you kept everything you love about American Mahjong and added a little chaos on top.
Where it started
Roxanne hosted a monthly mahjong bash, the kind of standing game night that becomes a tradition. The tiles clicked, the laughter got louder, and someone always said the four most dangerous words at the table: just one more game. One night, half as a joke and half as a dare, she started imagining cards that could shake up a round without changing the game everyone already knew by heart.
Why she built it
Roxanne built Mischief Mahj for the players she knows best: women who take their game seriously and their fun even more so. The deck honors the roots of American Mahjong while giving the table permission to cause a little trouble. Steal a joker, reveal a line, or write your own house rule on the spot. Same tiles, new fun.
Because it plays with any standard set and comes with an easy rule card, it welcomes newcomers just as warmly as it riles up seasoned players. That was the whole point: keep the game accessible, keep the table laughing.
What’s next
These days Roxanne is still doing what started it all, gathering people around the table and giving them a reason to laugh. She’s also taking the brand on the road, from her own mahj nights to events around the South, deck in hand and ready to stir up a little mischief.
